Ulcerative Colitis and Turmeric

Remedy Ideas

Colitis Diet - Turmeric

I've read a lot of good things about Turmeric. Where there are lists of good food; articles on 'alternative' medicines; lists of natural food that helps inflammation, Turmeric always seems to be there.

Found in a plant that's part of the Ginger family, it's a natural anti-flammatory that has been used in medicine for thousands of years. Sometimes referred to as Curcumin, which is actually the active ingredient in Turmeric and the part that gives it the yellow colouring.

Tests have shown that even in small amounts it can help to:

  • reduce inflammation
  • reduce thickening of the intestine wall
  • reduce ulceration caused by mucus

It is available as a spice but can also be bought in tablet form. I've read a few messages on the Colitis forums about UCers using the tablets. Fortunately it's not too much of an overpowering taste so you can add it to a fair few things.

Turmeric is a good source of:

  • iron
  • manganese

Turmeric also contains:

  • vitamin B6
  • dietary fiber
  • potassium

After reading a study (double blind pacebo-controlled trial) that showed 2 grams of curcumin per day helps to control Ulcerative Colitis as maintenance therapy, I've upped the amount I take per day, which I add to my morning smoothie.
